Top 10 Wreck Dives In The World

2. The World’s largest wreck. SS President Coolidge

The story of how a once luxury liner transformed to support Allied forces throughout the second world war and eventually came to rest to create one of the best wreck dives in the world. Accessible to both recreational and technical divers it offers the opportunity to travel back in time and experience the hidden secrets of the SS President ial Coolidge as they are preserved beneath the waters of the beautiful South Pacific.

It was in Vanuatu that the Coolidge was lost. One of Vanuatu’s largest islands, Espirutu Santo had been established as one of the strongholds of the US forces, containing an airfield, military base and a heavily protected harbour. The surrounding channels and ports of entry to Espirutu Santo had been laid with mines to protect against a water based assault or Japanese submarines in search of a target.
For reasons unknown the Coolidge hadn’t received information on the safe passage into the harbour and for fear of attack from Japanese submarines, the Captain chose to enter the harbour through the largest channel. The Coolidge hit two mines on her approach, The Captain feared losing his ship and he made the decision to ground the ship on a nearby reef ordering all 5,340 men to abandon ship leaving all belongings behind.
The coolidge sank quicker than expected and slid down the slope into the channel and she now lies at a depth of 21m or 70ft and her stern at 73m or 240ft.

1. Yongala

For loads of people they have claimed that the Yongala in austraila is the best wreck dive in the world. The Yongala sank off the coast of Queensland during a cyclone in 1911, killing 122 people. The ship had no telegraph facilities and could not be warned of the weather ahead.
In 1981 the yongala was given official protection under the historic shiprwecks act and you are therefore not allowed inside the ship. Not to be disscuraged to dive there because this wreck site has loads of sealife including manta rays, sea snakes, octopuses, turtles, bull sharks, tiger sharks, clouds of fish and a beautiful coral
