Its 118 islands are divided into five major groups: the Society Islands archipelago, which is composed of the Windward Islands and the Leeward Islands, the Tuamotu Archipelago, the Gambier Islands, the Marquesas Islands and the Austral Islands. Whichever you choose you can’t make a mistake because you will surely return to discover the neighboring islands as well.
There is a legend that says Tahiti was not always in its current place, but that it was transplanted from the Great Havai’i (Ra’iatea). That’s why it’s named Tâ-hiti (Transplanted). There are numerous activities you could explore on this marvelous island from scuba diving, surfing lessons, and other water based adventures, to a mountain safari through the Papenoo valley. The interior of the island can be crossed on a trail that follows the large valley, rich in archaeological sites and spectacular views of impressive waterfalls.
